MEET DAWN
With nearly three decades of experience in physical therapy, Dawn Cox has built her career around a simple but powerful philosophy: the key to lasting change is understanding why the body isn’t functioning optimally—not simply treating where it hurts.
As a Certified Functional Manual Therapist (CFMT), Dawn brings advanced training, a keen eye for detail, and a creative problem-solving approach to identifying mechanical dysfunction and movement compensations that may otherwise be overlooked. Known as a “detective of the body,” she looks beyond the obvious symptoms to uncover the underlying contributors to pain, restricted movement, and recurring injuries.
Dawn combines skilled hands-on manual therapy with individualized movement retraining to help patients restore mobility, improve coordination, and move more efficiently and comfortably. Her approach emphasizes injury prevention as well as recovery, helping patients recognize and address dysfunctional movement patterns before they become persistent problems. Her goal is to help people achieve optimal function, reduce pain, and return to the activities they love without accepting recurring aches and limitations as an inevitable part of life.
Dawn has particular expertise in performing arts and dance physical therapy, with a special interest in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders. She also treats complex orthopedic conditions affecting the spine, pelvis, hips, shoulders, knees, and feet. Her clinical approach considers the interconnected mechanics of the body, recognizing that the source of pain is not always where symptoms appear. For example, persistent knee, Achilles tendon, neck, or lower back pain may involve contributing dysfunction elsewhere in the movement system. She also has a special interest in coccyx dysfunction, an often-overlooked contributor to persistent pelvic and lower back pain.
Beyond traditional orthopedic care, Dawn integrates her knowledge of movement, yoga, and injury prevention with an interdisciplinary approach to sleep, breathing, and airway-related concerns. She is passionate about helping patients understand their bodies, move with greater efficiency, and develop the skills to support long-term health and performance.
DAWN’S JOURNEY
Dawn’s path to physical therapy was anything but conventional. After earning her degree in Textile and Apparel Management from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 1989, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in public relations. But her passion for the human body remained central to her life. While teaching fitness and dance classes and working as a personal trainer at New York City gyms, including Equinox, she discovered that helping people move and function better was more than an interest—it was her calling.
At 30, Dawn returned to school to pursue physical therapy, graduating summa cum laude from Long Island University in Brooklyn in 2000. Eager to deepen her clinical expertise, she began studying Functional Manual Therapy through the Institute of Physical Art in 2001. The precision and whole-body perspective of this approach transformed how she understood movement and patient care, inspiring her to pursue advanced continuing education.
Dawn went on to work in pediatric physical therapy with the New York City Board of Education while also treating patients in outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine. She later joined PhysioArts, a premier performing arts physical therapy clinic in the heart of Broadway. There, she refined her hands-on clinical skills while working with performers from productions including The Lion King, Movin’ Out, 42nd Street, and The Producers, as well as dancers associated with the Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp dance companies and the Radio City Rockettes.
After 17 years in New York City, Dawn and her family relocated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to be closer to family. She brought with her a distinctive approach to physical therapy grounded in advanced manual techniques, whole-body assessment, and movement retraining. In 2008, she achieved her Certified Functional Manual Therapist credential through the Institute of Physical Art, passing with distinction. She went on to establish Prana Functional Manual Therapy, creating a practice centered on individualized, hands-on care and a commitment to helping people move and function at their best.
Dawn’s passion for prevention also inspired the development of MyoKind, a business-to-business preventative physical therapy company that brings movement health and injury prevention directly to workplaces through on-site sessions and educational video programs.
A committed member of the Lancaster community, Dawn has served with the James Street Improvement District and the Lancaster City Alliance’s Marketing Executive Leadership Team. In 2011, she received recognition from SCORE Lancaster for excellence in business development and was recognized by Fig Lancaster as a leader in healthcare. She continues to share her knowledge through seminars for local businesses and organizations—and is affectionately known for offering posture tips to anyone who will listen.
BEYOND THE CLINIC
Outside of work, Dawn enjoys social dancing, yoga, strength training, hiking, biking, gardening, cooking, and exploring Lancaster’s restaurants. She loves walking her dog, Blu, and spending time with family. Her mother, now in her 90s, continues to inspire her, while her two children, Georgia and Liam, pursue their own paths—Georgia in marine mammal conservation and Liam at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dawn brings the same curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm to life outside the clinic that she brings to patient care. For her, helping people move better is about more than reducing pain: it’s about giving them the freedom and confidence to keep doing what makes life meaningful.

Functional Manual Therapy® is an approach to patient care coined and developed by Gregory and Vicky Johnson in the early 1990’s.
We are unique in that we do not have any physical therapy assistants on staff; we provide all our patients direct contact with a licensed physical therapist for personalized, one-on-one treatment sessions

Dawn is a CFMT (certified functional manual therapist), which means she is only one of 4 in Pennsylvania to be certified with this proven, effective system for treatment of a wide spectrum of patients.
Justin, Heather, Charlie, Shannon, Joseph, Sean, and Adam are also very knowledgeable in functional manual therapy as this is Prana's paradigm of treatment.
Natalie can help you with all of your billing questions. And with Lori and Brandy, they can get you scheduled, take your payment and facilitate any logistical questions to get you started.
